Cape Cod on two wheels Posted on May 20th
Riding a bike on Cape Cod, I was huffing and puffing as I peddled up a paved pathway on a short, steep hill in Provincetown. Yeah, it was a hill of sand, but this was no anthill.
Then the view: miles of ocean, sand dunes everywhere, lots of pitch pines. Not much else. There were but three colors in this P’town palette: steel blue, pine green, buff sand. Worth every huff.
This was Cape Cod distilled to its original essence, and instead of smelling exhaust fumes along Routes 6 or 28, the smell of salt air was untarnished. It made you want to down a bowl of seafood stew later.
I was bicycling some of the major bike trails of the Cape on a two-day getaway, soaking up Cape culture and sights while, not incidentally, invigorating the soul with the exercise. Moreover, at least for the moment, I could put $4-a-gallon gasoline out of mind.
